Up Close & Personal: THE WAR ROOM & THE LETTER NEVER SENT

on March 20th Criterion will be releasing The War Room and The Letter Never Sent, which seem like two films that are about as far removed as two films can be, but i like to think of them both as movies about men trying to escape an environment that is hell-bent on destroying them until they’re little more than meat and history. as to whether or not they have happy endings… well, you’re gonna have to decide that for yourself.

Letter Never Sent is the more fetching of these two releases, despite being practically bare-bones (The War Room is a doc starring James Carville, so beauty isn’t exactly a guiding principle with that one). both packages are nicely detailed, The War Room reminding me of Criterion’s Blow-Out release, filled out with thin booklets — Letter Never Sent tucks glimpses of severe beauty above essays and behind the disc, itself.

so take a gander, and i’ll be back with thoughts on the actual discs later.
